OpenAI's New $100 Plan: Did They Copy Claude's Homework?

OpenAI just launched a $100/month ChatGPT Pro tier — same price, same 5x multiplier as Claude Max. Coincidence? Let's talk about it.

So, OpenAI quietly did something yesterday that made me laugh out loud at my coffee. They launched a $100/month ChatGPT Pro plan — and the pricing sheet looks suspiciously familiar if you've been paying Anthropic any attention this year.

Let me show you what I mean.

The "new" tier

Until yesterday, ChatGPT subscriptions jumped from $20 (Plus) straight to $200 (Pro). That's a brutal cliff — a 10x price hike for anyone who hit their Codex limits and needed more room. Power users have been screaming about it for months.

Sam Altman's answer, announced April 9: a middle tier at $100/month, with 5x the Codex capacity of the $20 Plus plan. They're even throwing in temporarily elevated limits until May 31, 2026, to sweeten the deal.

Sounds great. Until you look at what Anthropic has been selling since Claude Max launched a year ago.

The pricing mirror

Here's the side-by-side. I didn't make this up. I just put it in a table.

To be fair, Anthropic didn't exactly invent the concept of "charge more for more stuff." But launching the exact same two price points with the exact same 5x / 20x framing — nearly a year after Claude Max had already trained the market to expect it — that's not parallel evolution. That's a xerox.

Why this is actually good news

Here's where I'll surprise you: I think the copying is fine. Great, even.

When two big competitors converge on the same pricing, it usually means one of two things:

  1. The market spoke, and both companies heard it. Power users want a middle tier. The $20-to-$200 cliff was cruel. Someone had to break it.
  2. Coding is the new center of gravity. Notice what both companies are measuring these plans in — not "messages per day" or "tokens per month," but coding usage. Codex for OpenAI, Claude Code for Anthropic. The entire pricing conversation has shifted from "chatbot for humans" to "agent that writes your code."

That's a huge tell. Two years ago, the $20 ChatGPT plan was sold as "ask it anything." Now, the $100 plan is basically "how much code do you need the robot to write this week?" The product has changed, and the pricing is finally catching up.

The real question nobody's asking

If OpenAI is copying Anthropic's pricing structure, the obvious next question is: are they also matching the value?

This is where it gets interesting. Anthropic's Max plan bundles Claude Code, the desktop app, and the mobile app into one subscription — your $100 follows you across every surface. OpenAI's $100 tier is much more tightly focused on Codex capacity. Different philosophies hiding behind identical price tags.

Think of it like two coffee shops charging $5 for a latte. Same price, but one is giving you a 12oz drink and a pastry, and the other is giving you a 16oz drink and nothing else. Neither is wrong. But you should know which one you're buying before you tap the card.

My take

I've been using both products heavily, and honestly? The $100 middle tier has been the missing puzzle piece on both sides. If you're a solo dev, an indie hacker, or a designer using AI for prototyping, $20 runs out fast and $200 feels like a corporate expense. $100 is the honest "I am one serious human using this tool every day" number.

What I don't love is the timing trick — OpenAI offering "elevated limits until May 31, 2026" is a classic bait-and-switch setup. You sign up during the promo, get used to the headroom, and then in June the ceiling drops. I've seen this movie. It ends with a Reddit thread full of angry screenshots.

So: if you're going to pay OpenAI $100, pay attention to what your actual usage looks like after May 31. Not during the honeymoon.

And to Anthropic: the fact that your competitor is copying your pricing sheet line by line is probably the best compliment you'll get all year. Don't get cocky.
